Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe and currently (2005) the seventh largest port in the world, following major ports in Asia. The Port of Rotterdam serves as the main gate for

transport into Europe. The harbour functions as an important transit point for transport of any goods thinkable, between Europe and other parts of the world. From Rotterdam goods are transported by ship, river barge, train or road. Since 2000 a fast cargo railway from Rotterdam to Germany, the Betuweroute , has been under construction.
